The plan for redevelopment of the the J.C. Pleijsierschool in Transvaal, the Hague, designed by Geurts & Schulze Architects, united three seperate locations within the larger area of the Transvaal College. When Claus Wiersma and Guido Marsille visited those locations, they studied the way pupils interacted. They observed that pupils had organically improved their environment by adding elements to it such as large self-made ashtrays in front of the entrance, places for exhibiting their work and an incidental car workshop. In so doing, the pupils made themselves at home.
The design for the two squares consisted of sturdy, mobile seating objects that could be used for several purposes. The material was robust, allowing it to be carved on. The positioning of the objects divided the square into different ‘territories’. A factor that predominantly supported their function as a place for lingering. As the objects were moveable and multifunctional they were suitable as a platform for performances or a fashion parade, dinner tables, secondhand market stands or seats for a movie feature.
